The United States will continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense and resist attempts to use force or coercion against it. That’s according to the US National Security Strategy report released on Wednesday.

The document says the US will uphold its commitments to support Taiwan, as outlined in the Taiwan Relations Act. It also says the US aims to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, which it says is “critical to regional and global security and prosperity.”

The Foreign Ministry’s North American section head Douglas Yu-tien Hsu said at a press conference on Thursday that the ministry is thankful for and welcomes the report. He also said Taiwanese foreign service is in contact with relevant US congresspeople regarding a recent remark by Congressman Brad Sherman.

Sherman attended a National Day banquet held late last week at Taiwan’s Los Angeles representative office. He said at the banquet that he hopes Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu can one day attend US House Foreign Affairs Committee hearings.

Hsu says Taiwan hopes to continue interacting with the US in various ways to deepen mutual understanding and support between the two countries.
