Taiwan reported 54,874 new local cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Over a fifth of the people with new cases of COVID are from New Taipei, with 11,234 people there testing positive. Another 7,018 have the disease in Taichung, along with 6,351 in Taipei.
Another 48 people have died from COVID-19. Most were over the age of 80, and only a third had taken three doses of a COVID vaccine.
Authorities say another 220 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.
Taiwan also recorded 55 imported cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Despite a noticeable rise in cases compared to last week, Taiwan is still going ahead with its plans to remove quarantine requirements for arriving passengers starting from October 13.
