Germany would help Taiwan if it were under military threat. That was the word from German-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman Klaus-Peter Willsch as he and his delegation met with President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning.
Willsch is leading a seven-member parliamentary delegation from Germany on a five-day visit. It is the first German parliamentary group to visit since the pandemic.
He said that Germany’s parliament firmly supports Taiwan and that strengthening bilateral ties is very important.
President Tsai Ing-wen thanked the delegation for their support and for passing the first parliamentary resolution supporting Taiwan’s observer status at the World Health Assembly this year.
She said 125 cross-party parliamentarians also signed a letter to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressing their support for Taiwan. She thanked the delegation for Germany’s support in the G7 foreign ministers' statement of support for Taiwan as it faced escalated Chinese military pressure during military exercises in August.
The visiting delegation arrived on Sunday and includes five deputy chairs of the parliamentary friendship group. The group includes lawmakers from six different political parties.
