The United States maintains that its policy towards Taiwan has not changed. That's after President Joe Biden's recent statement about defending Taiwan from an invasion. Biden administration official Kurt Campbell said on Monday that the US's goal is still to maintain peace and stability in the cross-strait region.
In a 60 Minutes interview broadcast on Sunday, President Biden said the US would defend Taiwan if it faced "an unprecedented attack." That's the fourth time in the past two years the president has publicly stated the US would use force to protect Taiwan from an invasion.
After Biden's interview, administration officials said US policy on Taiwan has not changed. That includes the policy of "strategic ambiguity." That policy says the United States is not obligated to defend Taiwan from invasion, but does not renounce that possibility either.
Campbell says the White House’s statement is not meant to discredit the president's earlier claims about Taiwan. He says Biden's words "speak for themselves" and the US will continue to promote healthy dialogue and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
