A poll has found that 51% of people surveyed in Taiwan believe China would win a cross-strait war. Only 30% think Taiwan would win while the rest were undecided. That was the latest from a survey released on Tuesday by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation.

The poll shows that Taiwanese public opinion is divided over the government’s response to the rise in tensions with China. The poll found that 41% of respondents had confidence in the Tsai Ing-wen administration’s ability to protect Taiwan while 52% didn’t.

Respondents were also questioned about Taiwan’s response to increased Chinese military activity around Taiwan. That increase followed a visit from US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August. 44% believed Taiwan’s response to Chinese military activity has been too weak, while 42% disagreed.

Meanwhile, 43% were satisfied with President Tsai’s handling of relations with China, while 49% expressed dissatisfaction.

The poll of 1,005 adults was taken between September 12 and 13. It had a margin of error of 3.09 points.
