Eastern Taiwan was rocked by a magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Monday morning, less than a day after a magnitude 6.8 quake shook buildings across the island.
The latest big earthquake hit Hualien County’s Zhuoxi Township shortly after 10 a.m.
All in all, authorities say there have been at least 147 earthquakes since Sunday.
The National Fire Agency says the quakes have killed one person: a worker at a ready-mix concrete factory who was crushed by falling equipment. Almost 150 people have been injured and hundreds are still trapped in remote areas where roads are blocked.
Fire departments have mobilized almost 300 personnel, more than 120 vehicles and five helicopters.
The government says more than 600 homes still have no electricity and over 2,000 don’t have water.
Authorities say the quakes are becoming less frequent. But they say another quake over magnitude 5 could strike within the week.
Taiwan’s Seismological Center says if an earthquake hits, people should protect themselves from falling objects and shut off their electricity, gas and tap water. The center says people should not rush out of their homes nor use the elevator.
