The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling for closer ties with Taiwan and strongly condemning China’s live-fire military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. Thursday’s vote passed with 424 in favor to 14 against, with 46 abstentions.
China launched war games on an precedented scale around Taiwan last month after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island. In response, the European Parliament is urging regional peace and stability and demanding that China stop its threatening activity against Taiwan.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry has welcomed the resolution and expressed its thanks for European support. It’s promising to deliver on its commitment to democracy and cooperate with like-minded partners who share its values and vision of an open Indo-Pacific.
The resolution also praised Lithuania for opening a trade representative office in Taipei this month. It calls on other EU countries to follow the Baltic state’s example and work more closely with Taiwan.
