The minister of Taiwan’s Council of Indigenous Peoples is calling for the country to work more closely with Tuvalu. Icyang Parod’s comments came on Friday as the council received a visit by the Pacific island nation’s prime minister, Kausea Natano.
Icyang Parod says in the past, Taiwan has invited Tuvaluan artisans to come to Taiwan to share their craft. He says that and other exchanges have helped the two countries understand each other better.
Prime Minister Natano, for his part, says he told President Tsai Ing-wen that the Tuvaluan people and Indigenous peoples in Taiwan share a deep respect for traditional culture.
Natano also says he looks forward to working with Taiwan’s Council of Indigenous Peoples on a climate emergency declaration organized by civil society groups in Pacific countries.
