Civic group raises concerns over shuttered tabloid’s personal data
Economic Democracy Union activists.

The Taiwan edition of Apple Daily failed to comply with Taiwanese data law when it ceased operating in August. That’s according to the civil society organization Economic Democracy Union.

Apple Daily’s closure came after its parent company was shuttered under Hong Kong’s National Security Law. This led to concerns that Taiwanese user data could be accessed by authorities in the Chinese region.

The culture ministry has asked Apple Daily to create a plan for compliance with data regulations, but the publication has failed to do so. In response, the union has called for the ministry and investigators to look into the former publication’s situation.

Many fear Apple Daily’s data could also be used to potentially threaten the security of Taiwanese nationals. Hong Kong authorities have reportedly hired an accounting firm in Taiwan to liquidate the company.
