The Taipei Zoo is celebrating the birth of a newborn red-crowned crane with a naming contest that will be launched on Friday.
Resident red-crowned cranes Kika and Big arrived from Japan 11 years ago and hatched their first egg in July. The mother Kika had laid eggs in 2015 but they did not hatch.
The Taipei Zoo describes 17-year-old Kika and 20-year-old Big as responsible first-time parents.
The vote for the colt can be done online or at the zoo. The names include “Li Ho” which is Taiwanese Hokkien for “hello” and “Jia Ho” which means “very good.” Participants will be eligible for prizes in a drawing.
The zoo says there will be many Mid-Autumn Festival events this weekend and zoo hours will be extended until 9 pm during the long weekend holiday. The planned activities include dances, performances and interactive activities.
