Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be laid to rest in a state funeral set for September 27. He’ll be the first Japanese leader to receive the honor in 55 years.
Abe was shot dead by a former member of the Japanese military at a campaign rally on July 8.
Japanese media say the government has sent notification of the funeral to all the countries Japan recognizes, as well as Taiwan, which doesn’t have official ties with Japan.
A total of 1,000 guests are expected to gather in Tokyo to pay tribute to Abe, including US Vice President Kamala Harris and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It isn’t clear whether a Taiwanese official will attend the ceremony, although Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te did attend an earlier, private funeral service shortly after the former prime minister’s death.
