Taiwan reported 28,397 new local cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
New Taipei City saw the most new infections, with 6,313 people there testing positive. Taichung City had the second-most new infections with 3,393, followed by Taipei City with 3,317.
Authorities say daily cases are rising again. Reinfection rates may also increase as the Omicron BA.5 subvariant becomes the dominant strain.
Another 18 people have died from COVID-19. Their ages ranged from 30 to over 90 years old. Less than a third had taken three doses of a COVID vaccine.
Authorities say another 127 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.
Taiwan also recorded 173 imported cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
