COVID-19 (08/22): Taiwan reports 16,669 local cases, 23 deaths

Taiwan reported 16,669 new local cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That includes 34 infections with the new BA.5 subvariant of Omicron.

New Taipei City saw the most new infections, with 3,470 people there testing positive. Taoyuan City had the second-most new infections with 2,087, followed by Taipei City with 1,984.

Authorities say daily cases are rising again and they expect the new wave of BA.5 infections to reach a peak at the end of September.

Another 23 people have died from COVID-19. Most were over the age of 60, and only about a third had taken three doses of a COVID vaccine.

Authorities say another 57 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.

Taiwan also recorded 242 imported cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
