COVID-19 (08/18): Taiwan reports 23,088 local cases, 34 deaths
Taiwan's COVID-19 case numbers for August 18, 2022.

Taiwan reported 23,088 new local cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. That’s a 2% rise on last week.

If you take into account the population of each area of Taiwan, Hualien County is a hotspot for the virus. More than 400 people have new cases of COVID there. Hsinchu City is also dealing with a high number of infections, as are the Penghu Islands.

Another 34 people have died from COVID-19. Half were over the age of 80, and only about a third had taken three doses of a COVID vaccine.

Authorities say another 111 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.

Taiwan also recorded 337 imported cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.
