A delegation of US lawmakers has traveled to Taiwan — just 12 days after a historic visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The group led by Democratic Party Senator Ed Markey met with President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday.

Markey tweeted on Monday morning that the visit aims to reaffirm US support for Taiwan and encourage stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait.

The delegation arrived on Sunday, less than two weeks after Nancy Pelosi became the first serving US House Speaker to visit Taiwan for 25 years.

Beijing said Pelosi’s visit “seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty.” It followed by launching military drills that appeared to practice blockading Taiwan, which Beijing insists is an “inalienable part” of China’s territory.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says Markey’s arrival shows the United States is not afraid of China’s “threats and intimidation.”

The delegation left Taiwan Monday afternoon.
