COVID-19 (08/15): Taiwan reports 15,596 local cases, 22 deaths

Taiwan reported 15,596 new local cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That includes the country’s first domestic case of the BA.4 subvariant, as well as 33 new cases of BA.5.

New Taipei City saw the most new infections, with 3,084 people there testing positive. Taoyuan City had the second-most new infections with 1,973, followed by Taichung City with 1,897.

Another 22 people have died from COVID-19. They were aged between 50 to over 90 years old. Most had a history of chronic illness, while more than half of those who died had not been vaccinated.

Authorities say another 33 people are suffering from moderate or severe symptoms of the disease.

Taiwan also recorded 196 imported cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
