The economics ministry says that labels for exported goods should adhere to Taiwan’s standards. The statement follows a move by China to strictly enforce a 2015 regulation that requires Taiwanese companies designate the origin of products entering the country as “Chinese Taipei” or “Taiwan, China”.
According to the ministry, Taiwan doesn’t object to suppliers changing the export label to comply with China’s regulation. In Taiwan, however, exports are permitted to be labeled “Taiwan,” the “Republic of China,” or “R.O.C.”.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. This latest move to restrict Taiwanese imports into China is just one of many retaliatory measures China has taken against Taiwan in response to US House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit last week.
