US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that America's solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. The office of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the remarks in an official statement as she arrived in Taipei late Tuesday night. It said that her delegation's visit to Taiwan honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant democracy.
Pelosi's trip to Taiwan is part of a broader trip to the Indo-Pacific and is focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance. Her Asia trip also includes visits to Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan.
She also clarified that the trip is one of several Congressional delegations and does not contradict longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, US-China Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances. It said the United States continues to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo.
Pelosi is the highest ranking US official to visit Taiwan since House Speaker Newt Gingrich visited in 1997.
