Taiwan’s top officials have not yet confirmed a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi but are saying they welcome visits from foreign friends and guests.
Media reports have said Pelosi will arrive in Taiwan Tuesday night and meet President Tsai Ing-wen at the legislature on Wednesday.
In response to questions about Pelosi’s possible visit, Premier Su Tseng-chang said on Tuesday that Pelosi has been a longtime supporter of democracy and the government welcomes her visit.
The foreign ministry also said it has “no comment” about a reported Pelosi visit. It said that is due to the fact that Pelosi’s office has not officially confirmed a visit.
Vice President of Taiwan’s legislature Tsai Chi-chang did say that a visit by Pelosi is very likely. He said Pelosi has been a longtime supporter of Taiwan, democracy and human rights and the legislature welcomes the visit of such a distinguished guest.
