President Tsai Ing-wen says democratic partnerships are essential to counter major global challenges like the rise of authoritarianism. Tsai made these remarks on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the Ketagalan Forum’s 2022 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue in Taipei.

The one-day forum aims to focus on the impact of the war in Ukraine, tensions between China and the United States, and conflict between democratic and authoritarian regimes. Participants include representatives from Japan, the US, France, Germany, and India, among others.

Tsai says Taiwan’s location puts it on the frontline against totalitarian regimes, which it has handled for decades. She says this makes Taiwan an invaluable democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific, and it will continue to promote peace and stability in the region.

Tsai adds that Taiwan is also promoting stronger international relations through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework. She says that building economic ties between democratic nations can help form a united front against authoritarianism in the world.
