Health authorities in Taiwan have uncovered two more local cases of the BA.5 Omicron subvariant of COVID-19.
Doctors detected the first in a man in his 60s who had picked up two of his family members from the airport in early July. One of those family members later tested positive for BA.5, and the man tested positive on July 13.
Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center also told a press briefing on Monday that a shipyard worker in southern Taiwan has tested positive. Authorities don’t know how he caught the virus. Twelve of his close contacts have also tested positive. Doctors are still running tests to confirm that they have the BA.5 subvariant.
Health authorities are urging people who are eligible to get fourth vaccine doses to reduce the rate of infection and prevent severe illness.
