More students from Hong Kong and Macao will now be allowed to enroll in high school in Taiwan. Beginning in the fall, students from the two special administrative regions will be eligible to attend classes at 41 public, private, and vocational schools.
Previously, students from Macao and Hong Kong could only attend one senior high school in New Taipei City. Taiwan justified that on the grounds of national security.
But Taiwan’s education ministry changed the law this year to open up places at more schools, at a time when restrictions on students and academics in China are increasing.
Students at some schools will be able to enroll onto international programs like the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB). They will also be offered volunteer work and internships abroad.
