One of Taiwan’s top universities has opened a brand new college for masters degrees in semiconductors. Students at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung are guaranteed to get a job in the industry after they finish the three-year course.
The venture is backed by local semiconductor manufacturers. They helped design the program and they’re offering scholarships worth more than US$30,000 to every student.
The new college in southern Taiwan is part of a government push to foster more young talent in Taiwan’s key industries. Those industries are semiconductors, artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, the circular economy and finance.
Last year, Taiwan produced more than US$180 billion worth of semiconductors and their components.
National Sun Yat-sen University is the fifth university to open a college for semiconductor research. The institution will focus on semiconductor packaging and testing, as well as electronic components.
The university’s president says the new college is “the final piece in the puzzle” for cultivating talent in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry.
