Czech Senate passes pro-Taiwan resolution

The Czech Senate passed a pro-Taiwan resolution with a majority of votes on Wednesday. The document calls Taiwan a “subject of international law.” This all came as Taiwan’s Legislative Speaker You Si-kun was visiting the Central European country on Wednesday.

The resolution stresses the importance of bilateral ties between Taiwan and the Czech Republic. It supports the two sides working together on semiconductors, smart machinery and the cultural industry. It also points out that Taiwan’s investment in the Central European country has created 24,000 job opportunities.

But the resolution does end by saying that the Czech Republic has a one-China policy “like the EU.” That implies that Prague acknowledges Beijing’s claim that Taiwan is part of China.

Czech Senator Pavel Fischer, though, says that Taiwan has its own legislature, government, president, rule of law, judiciary, currency, territory and traditions. Fischer says there are many common grounds between the two countries and that includes the common language of democracy.

Fischer says Taiwan will still be a body of international law to his country even if China disagrees. He says few people abstained but no one voted against the pro-Taiwan resolution, indicating a majority of support for Taiwan among senators.
