60% of US businesses optimistic about Taiwan prospects over next 5 years

About 60% of US businesses in Taiwan are optimistic about the country’s growth prospects. That’s according to a survey released Thursday by the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham Taipei).

The 2015 Business Climate Survey is the fifth annual survey by AmCham. This year’s survey found that nearly 70% of respondents said they made a profit in 2014 and believe that revenues will continue to grow in 2015.

Also according to the survey, more than 60% of respondents believe that a trade in services agreement between Taiwan and China will be beneficial to Taiwan. Taiwan and China signed the agreement in June 2013, but the legislature has yet to approve the controversial pact.

Head of the AmCham, Thomas Fann, expressed the organization’s view.

"Our members believe that the trade in services agreements should bring more benefits than damage to Taiwan," said Fann.

"We just hope that this will be completed soon because what is at stake is [Taiwan’s] international credibility. If the agreement drags on for too long, other countries may wonder whether a finalized trade agreement negotiation with Taiwan will change in the future," he said.
