The Cabinet has revised a law that allows the deportation of foreign nationals who contracted the HIV virus.
Since Taiwan discovered its first case of HIV infection, 846 foreign nationals have been deported for testing positive for the virus. Human rights groups have long called on the government to drop such a provision.
On Thursday the Cabinet revised the law to remove the provision. If the amendment is approved by the legislature, HIV-positive foreign nationals will no longer be deported.
