Some of Taiwan’s tallest mountains got a dusting of snow early on Sunday morning.

Jade Mountain – which is the nation’s tallest – got about 1.5 cm of snow at around 7am on Sunday. Authorities have restricted traffic to the area, and are requiring people to bring appropriate winter climbing gear in order to gain access to mountains above 3,500 meters.

Meanwhile, Hohuanshan also got a dusting of snow on Sunday, at about 5am. Authorities say that the snow then turned to rain by 9am, with temperatures rising after daybreak. They lifted traffic restrictions which had required vehicles to have chains on their tires in order to gain access to the mountains.

Officials were warning of slippery road conditions and poor visibility. They were encouraging people to drive slowly and stay a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them.
