Defense ministry praises US bill allowing sale of frigates to Taiwan
The USS Taylor

U.S. President Barrack Obama has signed a bill that will allow the US to sell four Perry Class frigates to Taiwan. The US and Taiwan are expected to finalize the deal next year.

In response, defense ministry spokesperson Luo Shao-he said that the bill’s swift passage demonstrates the US government’s commitment to fulfill its obligations to Taiwan’s defense.

"The US has long been concerned about the situation in the Taiwan Strait. The US’s willingness to sell Perry class frigates to the Republic of China highlights the concrete steps the US administration and congress have taken to fulfill their obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act," Luo said. "It also shows  the US’s firm commitment to the security of the Republic of China. It fully demonstrates the stability of the US-Taiwan relationship and the mutual trust and friendship [between the two countries]. The Ministry of National Defense expresses its sincere gratitude to the US government and congress."

The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.

Once again, that was defense ministry spokesperson Luo Shao-he speaking on Friday.
