The acting chairman of Taiwan’s Central Election Commission says that the process is already under way for deciding whether to hold legislative elections in conjunction with the 2016 presidential elections.
The acting chairman, Liu I-chou said Sunday that the process for making the decision includes gauging the opinions of political parties and the general public, and holding public hearings.
Liu said that the legislative elections must be held by January 21, 2016, which is ten days before the term ends for current legislators. The presidential elections, on the other hand, must be held by April 19, 2016, about a month before President Ma Ying-jeou’s last day in office on May 20.
Liu said that the commission will make a decision on whether to hold the elections together or separately once it has gauged the opinions of the nation.
