Taiwan’s national library announced Friday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Tokyo that will lead to the establishment of a "Taiwan Resource Center for Chinese Studies" at the university.

This will be the 12th resource center for Chinese Studies the library will sponsor. The resources centers are part of Taiwan’s attempt to compete with Mainland China’s overseas centers for Chinese Studies.

Each year, the library selects a number of academic books, publications, audio-visual, and electronic resources on subjects related to Chinese Studies and donates them to its resource centers abroad.

Currently, Taiwan’s national library has resource centers at eleven universities in the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Malaysia, and Russia. The center in Japan will be the national library’s first in Northeast Asia. Last year, the national library donated 7,020 titles to its resource centers around the world.
