Vice President Wu Den-yih has stepped down from his position as one of seven vice chairmen of the ruling party – the Kuomintang (KMT). That’s following the party’s poor performance in the nationwide local elections over the weekend.
Wu is the latest in a string of high-profile resignations within the KMT, which have prompted speculation about President Ma Ying-jeou’s own plans as party chairman.
On the list of people who have already resigned are KMT Secretary-General Tseng Yung-chuan, and Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin, who is the current mayor of Taipei.
It’s being reported that President Ma is set to make a major announcement at a meeting of the KMT’s central standing committee on Wednesday. So far, though, the president has not mentioned any intention of resigning from his position as KMT chairman.
