Several high-profile resignations within the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) have prompted speculation about President Ma Ying-jeou’s own plans as the party’s chairman.
KMT Secretary-General Tseng Yung-chuan resigned on Saturday night shortly after Premier Jiang Yi-huah stepped down.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson confirmed on Sunday that the current mayor of Taipei, Hau Lung-bin, will also resign as KMT vice chairman.
It’s being reported that President Ma is likely to make a major announcement at a meeting of the KMT’s central standing committee on Wednesday. So far, though, the president has not mentioned any intention to resign from his position as KMT chairman.
In his remarks following Saturday’s elections, Ma said he had received the message sent by voters. He pledged to push for reforms, saying that he would not avoid responsibility.
