Chinese tourists have visited Taiwan more than 10 million times since they were first allowed into the country in July, 2008. That’s the word from the Cross-Strait Tourism Exchange Association on Saturday.

A report by China’s Xinhua News Agency put the number of visits by participants in group tours at nearly 8.3 million and the number of visits by independent travelers at around 1.7 million.

According to the report, Taiwan has become such a popular destination for Chinese tourists to spend the Western New Year holiday that many have been unable to book tour groups for this period. Those unable to get spots in a tour group will have to wait for the Lunar New Year to visit Taiwan.

Director of Shanxi Cordial International Tours, He Zhiyong, said that the period between November and April is a popular time for Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan because of the warm weather and the variety of events that take place in Taiwan during this period.
