The Central Election Commission (CEC) says that all campaigning for candidates running in Saturday’s municipal elections must stop before 10pm on Friday.

However, candidates may continue to campaign online till 11:59pm.

Candidates who continue their campaigns after the designated time will be fined up to NT$5 million (US$160,000).

The election on November 29 will be the largest is Taiwan’s history. Voters will be selecting candidates to fill nine types of offices ranging from mayors to city councilors. Voters will be able to fill as many as five different offices depending on where they live and whether or not they have aboriginal status. The CEC expects voter turnout to reach 65 to 70%. Because of the complexity of this year’s election, polling results might not come in until 11pm.
