On this day in 1953, the British Natural History Museum announced that the "Piltdown Man" skull, initially believed to be one of the most important fossilized hominid skulls ever found, was a hoax.

On this day in 1969, US President Richard Nixon and Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Satō agreed in Washington, DC on the return of Okinawa to Japanese control in 1972.

And on this day in 1972, voters in South Korea overwhelmingly approved a new constitution, giving legitimacy to Park Chung-hee and the Fourth Republic.
