Legislator Tsai Huang-liang of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has questioned leading national security and police officials about their preparations for the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for November 29.
Speaking at the legislature on Thursday, Tsai said that rumors of planned attacks against prominent candidates have been circulating on the internet. He expressed concern that violence could impact the outcome of the election.
In response to Tsai’s questions, Director-General of the National Security Bureau Lee Shying-jow recommended that candidates wear protective body armor. Lee said that the National Security Bureau could provide candidates with protective armor if needed.
Tsai also questioned Deputy Director-General of the National Police Agency Tsai Chun-chang about his agency’s preparations for the elections. The Deputy Director responded by saying that the National Police Agency has arranged for plainclothes police officers to follow and protect candidates in the run up to the elections.
