President, Canadian MPs brave rain to join Terry Fox charity run
Running President Ma Ying-jeou

President Ma Ying-jeou and visiting Canadian parliamentarians are braving the rain to join the Terry Fox charity run in Taipei. The charity run on Saturday was aimed at raising funds for canter research.

Despite occasional showers, thousands of local residents, foreign visitors, and expatriates put on their sneakers to take part in the event in recognition of Canadian Terry Fox. Fox had to have his right leg amputated as a young man due to bone cancer, but still managed to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research before he passed away in 1981.

President Ma, a jogger himself, said the funds raised by the charity runs over the years have played a significant role in enhancing medical treatment for bone cancer patients. He also said he is pleased to be able to participate in a Terry Fox run.

The charity run also brought John Weston, who chairs the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, and another member of Canada’s House of Commons, Chungsen Leung.
