Premier rejects demands by student protesters
Premier Jiang Yi-huah

Premier Jiang Yi-huah on Friday rejected protesters’ demands to renegotiate a service trade pact with China. The student protesters have been occupying and surrounding the legislative building for 11 days now.

Jiang said renegotiating the trade pact with China would have huge impact on Taiwan’s reputation in the international community. The premier also said the administration does not support calls to set aside the trade pact until the implementation of a new law that would subject all agreements with China to close scrutiny.

But he said the administration is open to the idea of drafting another law to legalize a four-stage supervisory mechanism.

“Next, we will work with party causes to find a way to legalize a supervisory mechanism on all cross-strait agreements," the premier. "As long as we all agree on this, I will ask the agency in charge to draft the necessary documents as soon as possible so this supervisory mechanism will have a clear legal foundation.”

Jiang said this supervisory mechanism will include four stages starting from the drafting to the signing of all cross-strait agreements.
