The edible oil products imported from Japan’s LOPS are for human consumption. That’s the word from Taiwan’s deputy representative to Japan, Yu Chi-zen, on Friday.
Yu was responding to an opposition lawmaker’s question a day earlier over the operations of the Japanese company.
Yu told lawmakers that LOPS voluntarily provided information about manufacturers of oils and fats to Taiwanese officials in October. Yu also said the representative office conducted random checks on documents such as the bills of lading, export permits, proof of origin, weight and transport.
Yu aid the documents, including the ones provided by a certified food inspection lab, showed that the edible oil products imported from LOPS is fit for human consumption and that they have not been tainted.
Yu also said statistics released by Japan Customs shows that LOPS exported nearly 1,500 tons of lard last year with the majority of it shipping to Taiwan.
Taiwan has been hit by a series of food safety scandals involving companies passing off recycled or animal feed oil as edible oil.
