Returning Taiwanese businesspeople should invest in real economy: DPP chairwoman
DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen says returning Taiwanese businesspeople should invest in “real economy”. Tsai was speaking at an investment forum in Taipei on Friday.

In her speech on the challenges that Taiwan faces, Tsai said the government did a poor job of tackling food safety problems. She was referring to the latest tainted oil scandal involving the Ting Hsin International Group, which she said failed to shoulder its social responsibilities.

Tsai said Ting Hsin, which made its fortune in China, is a bad example. She also made a few suggestions for successful Taiwanese businesspeople who are returning to the country to invest.

"First, when returning Taiwanese businesspeople invest in Taiwan, we hope they consider Taiwan their homeland and that they are keeping their roots here," said Tsai. "Second, we hope the government will encourage them to invest in real economy to make contributions to [Taiwan]. Third, the government must create an environment favorable to long-term investment," she said.

Tsai also called on the central and local governments to work together to ensure food safety.
