Taiwan’s foreign ministry says the results of the US Congress elections will not affect ties between the United States and Taiwan. Results from the recent US midterm elections indicated that Republicans will control both houses of Congress.
An official with Taiwan’s foreign ministry, Kelly Hsieh, said on Thursday that the overall election results will not affect Taiwan-US relations.
“[The election results] will not affect Taiwan-US ties; instead, they will allow us to continue to strengthen and renew friendship [with the US], said Hsieh." Whether Congress is controlled by the Democrats or the Republicans, it has always been friendly towards us.”
Hsieh said that Taipei-Washington ties are at their best in 35 years. He said that Taiwan will work to strengthen communication with the US Congress to gain more support from US lawmakers for the Taiwan Relations Act.
The Taiwan Relations Act is the cornerstone of Taiwan-US relations in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.
