The latest round of cross-party consultations on how to end the standoff on the cross-strait services trade pact has failed to yield a consensus.
The two-hour meeting was hosted by President of the Legislature Wang Jin-pyng on Thursday.
The ruling Kuomintang (KMT) agreed to a full review of the agreement by legislative committees. However, it requested that Wang preside over the review. It also demanded that the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) not boycott the review at any point in the process.
The DPP rejected the conditions set by the KMT. The DPP said it is against normal procedures to ask the legislature president to preside over the review.
Wang called for mutual trust between the two parties. Wang also asked if he could propose feasible solutions if both parties do not come up with solutions themselves.
Meanwhile, Wang said that President Ma Ying-jeou’s willingness to communicate with the student protesters is a good start. Wang also called on all sides to resolve differences for the good of the country.
