President Ma Ying-jeou says the 1992 Consensus is the principle that steers Taiwan's relations with China. Ma made the comment on Monday while meeting with the delegation that will be attending the upcoming APEC leaders’ summit in Beijing.
Ma said he is glad that former Vice President Vincent Siew is able to attend the summit on his behalf. He said Siew is familiar with economic and foreign affairs, and has attended APEC meetings several times.
“During the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, former Vice President Siew will have some opportunities to meet with leaders in China," said President Ma. "I think we want China to know that the peaceful development of cross-strait relations is built on the 1992 Consensus. This principle will not change. In the meantime, we also want to strengthen many cooperation projects between the two sides.”
The 1992 Consensus refers to a tacit understanding between Taiwan and China. Both sides agree that there is only "one China," but the two sides differ on what the "one China" means.
Ma hopes the delegation can express Taiwan’s determination and sincerity in participating in trade blocks.
