Taiwan closely monitoring situation in Burkina Faso
Compaore in Taiwan

The foreign ministry says the government is closely monitoring the situation in Burkina Faso. That’s the word from foreign ministry spokeswoman Anna Kao on Friday.

Unhappy with President Blaise Compaore’s insistence on staying in power for another a year under a transitional government, demonstrators are gathering for a second day, demanding an end to his 27-year rule.

Kao said Taiwan’s embassy in Burkina Faso has already activated a mechanism to ensure that the Taiwanese nationals in the country are safe, including diplomats and businesspeople.

President Compaore led a delegation to Taiwan last month to attend the National Day celebrations. Analysts said ties between the two sides will not be affected when Compaore steps down next year. Compaore has already agreed not to seek another term in office.

Analysts also said Burkina Faso has no reason to sever ties with Taiwan as the assistance provided by Taiwan has won support from its people and that cooperation between the two sides has gone smoothly.
