Premier Jiang Yi-huah says the government’s veteran benefits policy will remain unchanged. Jiang was speaking Friday at an award ceremony in honor of 18 outstanding veterans and 10 businesses offering job opportunities to military retirees.
Jiang said veterans have played a crucial role in helping to build Taiwan’s infrastructure over the past 60 years. Those infrastructure projects include the Central Cross-Island Highway, the Sun Yat-sen Freeway, the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and the North-link Line.
Friday also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Veterans Affairs Council. The Cabinet-level body is responsible for offering veterans assistance in vocational education, employment, medical care and elderly care.
Jiang said veteran benefits are not a legal issue but an issue of obligation and conscience. He also said the government has decided to loosen its restrictions on the year-end bonus for veterans.
