Foreign Minister David Lin says Taiwan will continue to promote viable diplomacy to achieve regional stability. Lin was speaking on Tuesday at an international forum hosted by the Association of Foreign Relations, Taipei Forum, and the US-based Brookings Institution.
The policy of viable diplomacy has meant an end to Taiwan and China trying to woo each other’s allies.
Lin said that over the past six years, the policy has borne results for Taiwan.
“The most important foreign policy assets we have are our full-fledged democracy and a strong commitment to fulifilling our obligations as a responsible member of the international community. The Republic of China (Taiwan) will continue to implement viable diplomacy, abide by international law, safeguard the nation's sovereignty, and promote regional peace and stability through cooperation and consultation,” said Lin.
The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.
Taiwan officials say that the policy of viable diplomacy has led to improved relations with China. They say it has also led to a number of international successes, including trade pacts with New Zealand and Singapore.
