The annual Taiwan LGBT Pride Parade, which calls for equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, has kicked off in Taipei.
On Saturday crowds assembled at the Ketagalan Boulevard in front of the Presidential Office. Participants were divided into two groups, one heading north, and the other heading south.
According to the organizer of the parade, Taiwan LGBT Pride, "Walk in Queers' Shoes" was selected as the parade's theme this year to call more attention to minority members of the LGBT community, such as HIV patients and sex workers.
Now in its 12th year, the Taiwan LGBT Pride Parade is one of the largest events of its kind in Asia.
Also on Saturday, the Safeguard Our Family Alliance held a press conference at the legislature. The alliance voiced its opposition to the parade, saying that it violates decency.
