Police chief taking responsibility for treatment of protesters

National Police Agency Director-General Wang Cho-chiun said on Wednesday that he will take responsibility for how protesters were treated by the police. He was referring to the forceful eviction of thousands of student protesters from the Cabinet building on Monday morning.

“When the whole thing comes to an end, I will take responsibility for what the riot police did," said. "But you asked whether President Ma Ying-jeou is furious with the police force? I think at the moment the president and Premier Jiang Yi-huah are not furious with the police.”

The police chief said that it was his job to maintain order and the rule of law when people broke into the Cabinet building. He stressed that the riot police had tried to persuade the protesters to leave and tried to carry protestors away. But thousands of agitated people at the scene eventually resulted in the injury of both protesters and police. Wang said he felt sorry about what happened.
