On this day in 1833, Alfred Nobel was born. He was the Swedish industrialist and chemist who invented dynamite. He also founded the Nobel Prize to award to the world's leading scientists, artists and peacemakers.

On this day in 1879, US inventor Thomas Edison successfully tested an electric incandescent lamp with a carbonized filament at his New Jersey laboratory.

On this day in 1946, Chiang Kai-shek, chairman of the National government, and Madame Chiang arrived in Taiwan for the first time for an inspection tour.

On this day in 1950, Communist Chinese forces began their occupation of Tibet.

On this day in 1964, Yang Chuan-kuang, Taiwan’s first Olympic medalist, announced his retirement after winning fifth place in the Tokyo Olympics. The decathlon champion was nicknamed the Iron Man of Asia and had won the Olympic silver medal in 1960.
