A meeting called by President Ma Ying-jeou to seek an end to the occupation of the legislature has been postponed. That’s the word from Presidential Office spokeswoman Lee Chia-fei on Friday.
Vice President Wu Den-yih and Premier Jiang Yi-huah were seen arriving Friday at the Presidential Office for the meeting, but legislature president Wang Jin-pyng failed to show up.
Lee said Wang requested that the meeting be postponed. Wang told President Ma over the phone that the legislature is seeking a resolution and a consensus between party caucuses to end the ongoing protest over a trade pact with China.
President Ma Ying-jeou said that he respects legislative autonomy and believes that the legislature can deal with the cross-strait trade in services agreement properly and lawfully.
The president reiterated his call for people to express their opinions in a rational and restrained manner and urged people to cherish Taiwan's hard-won democracy and rule of law.
